What decides the number of parameters that are passed by a function?For example in C the maximum number of arguments (and corresponding parameters) is 253 for a single function.

Well, the number you pass is the same number as declared in the method signature.

For example in C the maximum number of
arguments (and corresponding parameters) is 253 for a
single function.

Oh, you mean the maximum allowed number of arguments? Well, that's whatever is defined by the language spec, if there is a limit at all. If you're passing so many arguments that you need to worry about it, it's highly likely that you need to rethink your design.
