Soap vs. FTP for file transfer
Aug 5, 2004 3:15 PM

I need to transfer pdf files from one application (written in C/C++) to another application (written in Java). I have the option of using SOAP or FTP....what is the best method for file transfer? the pro's and con's of each?

Thanks

I didn't know SOAP exists on the C++ language. Anyway, I believe SOAP's primary task is distributed computing, just like CORBA and RMI. Of course sending files can be done with this, but I don't think it's a very practical solution. I may be wrong in this, so someone correct me if I am.

what's wrong with a good old floppy?

I would go for FTP but that's because i'm not really upto speed with SOAP. also as FTP is such an old standard (more widely established) it is more likely to be compatiable if you need to switch in another application to send the files in the first place?

Just my thoughts, probably a load of ****.

Hi,

Why use either ftp or soap to send files between two programs you have written? I would say that it is over kill to implement one of them. Just send the files as packages on a plain socket.

If you have to transfer the file directly to the application then the only question you have to ask is "What protocol does that application require?" However perhaps your question is really "I have to transfer a file to another computer and store it there, after which an application will process it, what should I do?" In this case it makes no difference whether that application is written in Java or Fortran II, your only concern is how to get the file to that computer. And in this case I would notice that FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol -- should I use this to Transfer a File?
