Probably best to export the excel data as a csv file first and then import it with a string tokenizer, but im sure some of the more experienced more knowledgable programmers on this forum can come up with a better solution.

There is a library at Apache for reading OLE objects - its early stuff, but if you just have a simple Excel file, it should do the job.

Alternatively, try your hand at the Java/Activex bridge that Sun provides.

To write to the database, use JDBC. There are good tutorials around on that.

the jakarta lib:
http://jakarta.apache.org/poi/index.html

It works nicely, even with more complicated files it works just fine, it just get harder to code decent parsing code when the data to read is scattered around
