encoding Weka and Java
Aug 1, 2004 7:53 AM

Hi,

has anyone in this forum ever used Weka, the data mining software ?
I really hope someone has.

I just realized that when reading an .arff file (the .arff is jsut the format of the input files required by weka), there is no way I can specify the encoding of the file for weka.
Even if I make specify it in my java script through the BufferedReader, weka jsut does not care and uses whatever default encoding it has.
But I even noticed that the default encoding for weka must be different from the default encoding of java.

How could I know what default encoding weka is using ?
I looked in the FAQs, the documentation, e-mailed the wekalist, I could not find an answer to the problem.

Any help ?

Grazia

I've never heard of it but searching the web for weka and arff gives this page: http://www.cs.waikato.ac.nz/~ml/weka/arff.html

The first thing it says is that "an ARFF file is an ASCII text file." There you have it; the character encoding is supposed to be ASCII.
