Java Interpreter and JIT Compiler

i just want to know in details

What happens when only Intrepreter acts on a bytecode ??
And What happens when JIT Compiler comes into spotlight ??

Now if both , the interpreter and compiler finally are resulting into the same desired results..then Y not only use the JIT Compiler as it is fast compared to Interpreter???
Y the intepreter has to be there???

Thanx in advance
