Polling processor speed with an applet
Jul 27, 2004 12:19 PM

Hi,

I want to be able to get the processor speed through a java applet. I am using the 1.3.1 API (don't ask). Unfortunately the System.properties does not have this value. One idea I was kicking around was this:

Ask the user to d/l a small C program.
C is executed through .exec().
C program then checks the CPU speed, and saves data to a text file.
Applet reads the data and we go from there.

Is this possible? I have been told that a java applet does not have permission to view any of the files on disk, in which case I won't be able to do this.

I would really appreciate some suggestions on how I can implement this. I hope I am missing some trivially simple solution :)

There is a very simple solution. Let the user enter the cpu speed into a textfield :)

Well, applets can't do any of those things (download programs to the client, execute those programs, read and write files on the client). But applets can do just about anything if you sign them and the person at the client agrees to let the applet mess with their system. (There are a lot of careless Internet users out there).
