database or filesystem for my image?
Jul 16, 2004 9:07 AM

hi,

I am developing a new application which will help me build an online photoalbum. I want to enable images to be uploaded, then displayed using thumbnails on my jsp. Should I store them in my database or on the filesystem. It would be easiest for me to put it in the database but I would be looking at several hundred photos in the future.

Therefore is it sensible to put them in the database? I am using MySQL 4.

You opinions are gratefully welcomed.

thanks,
andrew

Hi,

Sensible in what way? There is no problem in having some gig of data in a database.

i've been thinking about this as well after getting new camera and making LOTS of pictures. Luckily, camera puts nice exif details in jpegs, but additional info is nice to have as well. My own thoughts were to keep the images separate and use the db for storing the meta data. I don't want my permanent image storage to be db dependant, so keeping them separate allows you to quickly write them to cdrom
