Where to go from here?
Jul 14, 2004 6:45 PM

Hello,

I will be graduating in the next couple of months and I have taken a total of 4 java classes. Three of the classes took me all the way through Deitel & Deitel's Java book and the other was data structures in Java.

My question is, what should I do from here? Finding a job is hard enough, much less for someone just out of school. I read an article that suggested doing work on open source projects to help learn more, but it seems all of the open source projects are still over my head.

I love Java and it comes very naturally to me, however I just don't know what I should be doing from here. If anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

I would suggest staying in school and learning more - especially if "all" open-source projects are "over your head." I'm afraid that with your current qualifications, you'd probably end up with a technical support or help desk position, not a developer. Not trying to be harsh, okay? Just realistic. The days of being able to break in on the ground floor with minimal knowledge but a whole lot of enthusiasm are long gone... the dot-com bust finished it off real good.

Hi,

There is still some companies that hire people that are fresh out of the university. Try to get a job at a larger company, they are usually used to hire newly examed people (since it is cheaper).

I guess that I should rephrase when I said that open source projects are all way over my head. What I meant was everytime I ask about helping with an open source project they want someone with a lot of experience with Java.

Does anyone know any open source projects that could use some help from a Java n00b?

Thanks!

You don't need to ask. Go to sourceforge.net, find something that interests you and needs work, and start working on it. When you've completed something useful, submit it. Either it will be accepted or not, but either way you've gained some experience.

I went to sourceforge and went to the "Project help wanted" section. I emailed several different project contacts about helping them out and they all either didn't reply to my email or they said they wanted someone with a lot of experience.

I never thought it would be so hard to give away help!

Like I said, you don't need permission to work on it. If you find something that looks interesting to you, download the source and start tinkering with it. I don't know what the process is for submitting work, but if you cannot submit it at least you've still learned. It's something you can talk about in job interviews and can show self-motivation and the ability to work unsupervised.

Take Sun Certifications like SCJP, that might help finding a job sooner.

Thanks for the idea! I never thought about that. I guess it doesn't really matter if I can submit it back in as long as I take the time to write code. You know what they say... if you don't use it you loose it!

Thanks!
