Optional Packages - UNIX user
Jul 9, 2004 1:43 PM

We have an applet that depends on several JAR files. We used the Java Optional Packages mechanism to download the JAR files to JAVA_HOME\jre\lib\ext and it works great.

However, if a normal user hits our applet from a UNIX machine (without permission to JAVA_HOME\jre\lib\ext) directory then the JAR files will not be downloaded and the applet will not run.

Has anyone dealt with and found a solution for this issue?

Use WebStart - that downloads the appropriate JARs to run the applet (or application) to the user's home directory and doesn't need access to the JVM extension directory.

WebStart is not an option. We have to use an applet for this project Any other ideas?
