how to read a file from browser(applet)
Jun 22, 2004 6:39 AM

Hi,
I put message on applet. My applet is not reding a file from client machine. I got the answer from one of the forum member. That is, applets have little security. They canot read files from the client machine and can read a file from server.
Originally Iam a oracle developer. But I have to work on java also.
In my project , My applet needs to read a file from client machine. It is a requirement .
Is there any way like "plugins" or "enable brower" or "any other alternative way".

I have no idea on this. Please help/suggest me.

thanks in advance,

If you control the user population (e.g. company internal users with centrally configured browsers), you can sign the applet and set up the browser's plug-in policy to allow such applets access to client files.

If your users are external, you should think hard about why I, for example, would want your code touching my files.

thank you very much. I will talk to the people on this. I read in the internet if we change the properties file in browser directory like
acl.read = /home/dirname/filename

Then applet can read the file .

I am working on the linux machine and using mozilla browser. There are coulple of property files are there where to change ?

thank you
