If JAVA wants to require MS Word to open a file and edit on it. Can they really talk to each other? You have suggestions?

Here's one open source project underway. But, it'll be a while before it is done. The project is called POI. Check it out.

I have done something similar - Open an MS Word Document and do something on it and close it. I have used Office Automation using VC++ for the purpose and used JNI calls to interact between the Java Application and the MS Word. Tell me if it helps. For more info on Office Automation using VC++ go to the msdn.microsoft.com website.
